This is about my 2 day struggle to get 2 totally different wireless netgear cards to work in my compaq laptop.I had Ubuntu 6.10 in this laptop before and my netgear MA521 worked like a charm ,right out of the box.Well I loved this linux openerating system so much i figured i would try version 7.04 “Fiesty” , Little did i know that they used a different kernel for 7.04 and now my wireless nightmare began.I tryed to install ndiswrapper in 7.04 with my netgear MA521 and also my Netgear wpnt511 Rangemax and had no luck making either work this way. I have used ndiswrapper before with a Netgear WG511 on ubuntu 6.10 with great success.Im not sure what they did exactly to “Fiesty” but i finally decided to downgrade back to the trusty version 6.10 since it works. Just so everyone know i also tryed this with xubuntu 7.04 with no luck at all, but i did like the colors of that os alittle better.Well this is my computer rant for today ,check back for more soon.

I’ve had similar problems with 7.04 and the MA521. In fact according to this poll on the Ubuntu forums over 50% of people with wireless can’t get it to work on 7.04!
I’d like to stick with Ubuntu but I’m not sure if there’s any point if the kernel is going to refuse to cooperate. Did you have any luck later with the MA521 and Ubuntu 7.04?
No I tryed and gave up totally on it . I myself went back to 6.10 until they get 7.10 ready its in beta now.Hopefully someone will add the needed drivers back to the kernel in this version. But also ive noticed this same problem on fedora 6 and 7 , They will not detect out of the box like ubuntu 6.10 .
I’ve found a solution! According to this post on the Ubuntu forums, it’s a matter of resorting back to ndiswrapper and the Windows 2000 drivers. The post has a full description of what to do to get it working again step-by-step, and although the post is quite old it seems to do the trick.
